Since streaming sites took home entertainment by storm, Netflix has been one of the most popular sites. From their original series to hollywood classics, they have something for everyone.  Thanks to ultrafast broadband, you can stream movies and box sets instantly (depending on your speeds). Netflix has a great variety of box sets and movies that you can watch whenever you want and if there’s ever been a time to download Netflix, this year has been it. 

With 2020 being the year of box sets, Netflix has become our trusted friend, bringing us all the best original series that we can binge. With a great variety of movies and TV series that you can stream whenever you want, Netflix has certainly been lent on a few too many times this year. From Netflix original series and movies, to big blockbuster films, Netflix really has covered all corners. With so many options to choose from on Netflix, it can be hard to decide what to watch. So here are Truespeed’s top 10 best binge worthy series you need to be streaming this winter! 

The Crown 

The Crown is a mega popular historical drama, Netflix Original. The series is all about Queen Elizabeth’s life, from when she married Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) in 1947 to the early 21st century. New actors are cast every two seasons, to start off Claire Foy portrays Elizabeth in seasons one and two.  Season one covers events up to 1955, where Princess Margaret chooses not to marry Peter Towsend and Winston Churchill resigns as prime minister. There are currently 4 seasons, each with 10 episodes. The series have won a number of awards including Golden Globe and BAFTA’s. A great watch if you’re a fan of the royal family! 

Emily in Paris 

Lily Collins plays Emily Cooper in the newly released comedy drama, Emily in Paris. Emily moves from her Chicago based marketing firm to another company in Paris to give them an American perspective (which becomes apparent, they really didn’t want). She struggles to seek approval from her colleagues, whilst searching for love. Emily also struggles with the french culture and language, which she made no effort to learn. There is currently only 1 series with 10 episodes but fans are begging for more! Unfortunately, Emily in Paris was actually filmed in Paris, so we might be waiting a while for more episodes to be filmed. A great speedy stream for a quiet weekend. 

Lucifer 

Tom Ellis plays Lucifer Morningstar in the urban fantasy series Lucifer. He plays the Devil who takes a break from guarding Hell and escapes to earth. He owns his own nightclub in Los Angeles and starts working for the LAPD. Throughout the series he discovers a different side to him, one he never knew existed. His co-worker (Detective Decker) brought out this new side to him, causing him to gain her trust. There are 5 series, each with a various number of episodes. The series has won a number of awards, including the People’s Choice Awards. The perfect series to stream if you like supernatural fantasy. 

Modern Family 

Modern family is a hilarious family sitcom, starring Ed O’Neil, Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen, to name a few. The series highlights 3 related families, each dealing with different problems in their own way. Throughout the series you see the honest, crazy drama that goes on in family life that we can all relate to! The series ran for over 10 years, finally finishing this year. There are a whopping 11 seasons, each with 18-24 episodes. A great light-hearted watch for a sofa stream sesh. 

Selling Sunset 

Selling Sunset is an American reality TV series featuring Jason Oppenheim, Brett Oppenheim and Christine Quinn. The series is based on the glamorous Oppenheim Group’s real estate broker, where they sell million dollar properties to affluent buyers in LA. The drama heats up when a new colleague joins the team and they bicker over tiny issues. There are currently 3 seasons, each with 8 episodes. A cracking binge watch if you are a fan of reality TV. 

The Fall 

Gillian Anderson plays Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson in the crime drama TV series The Fall. The series is set in Northern Ireland where a senior investigating officer is called in to support the case of a murder investigation which has been going on for far too long. They soon discover the killer is on the loose, attacking young women in Belfast. Stella and her team are faced with the challenge of tracking down the killer. There are currently 3 series, each with 5-6 episodes. The series has won a number of awards including the Irish Film and Television Award and British Screenwriters Award and we understand why! 

Stranger Things

Stranger Things is a science fiction horror series set in the 1980’s starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Finn Woldhard. In a small town called Hawkins where everyone knows everyone, a series of supernatural occurrences result in the disappearance of a young boy taken by a monster. His mother and the police search for him along with his friends. It soon becomes apparent that the missing boy is in ‘Upside down’ and they realise there is more to the disappearance than they first thought. There are currently 4 seasons, the first 3 have 8 episodes and season 4 has 1 episode. 

The Haunting of Bly Manor 

The Haunting for Bly Manor is a horror TV series following on from the successful Haunting of Hill House series. The series is somewhat based on the horror novel by Shirley Jackson. After the death of the au pair, Henry (played by Henry Thomas) hires a new governess to help take care of his orphaned niece and nephew at Bly Manor, their family house. Mrs Grose, chef Owen and Jamie the groundskeeper also live at the estate. After arriving at Bly Manor the nanny finds some spooky occurrences, which all add up to a horrible story of the history behind the manor. The series only premiered on Netflix on the 9th October 2020 and has already become incredibly popular. A great choice for a spooky stream! 

Power

Crime drama Power stars Omari Hardwick as James St. Patrick. James is New York’s biggest drug dealer, going by the name “Ghost”. Lucifer opens a laundry business to make the cash from drug dealing seem like honest money. He then opens a nightclub so he can hide away even more money, balancing a double life. He finds himself in a crumbling marriage with Tasha and a new love interest Angela Valdez. The series stars 50 Cent who is also the executive producer. There are 6 seasons so far, each with 10-15 episodes. The series has won a number of awards including the NAMIC Vision Awards. 

The Queen’s Gambit 

The American drama fictional story is based on the life of Beth Harman (played by Anya Taylor-Joy). Beth became an orphan aged 9 after her mother was killed in a car accident. Beth masters the game of chess and is on a quest to be the best chess player in the world. The series is set in the 1950’s and follows Beth’s issues with drugs and alcohol. The popular Netflix series was released in October 2020, there is 1 series with 7 episodes. A perfect series for a quick binge watch.
