About the STAR Scheme

The STAR Scheme stands for ‘Support To Achieve Through Rugby’ and was founded by Chew Valley Rugby Club to help children with mental and physical illness and those from difficult backgrounds. By providing mentorship through an expert team of coaches, the scheme allows children to reap the benefits of playing rugby. Alongside sporting aspects, specially trained coaches provide invaluable knowledge to the students that holistically support them in a variety of ways including education and home life.

Many of the children have barriers that prohibit their ability to play rugby and impact their lives outside of sport. The STAR scheme aims to help students overcome obstacles and make a real and continued difference to their lives.

“The great thing about the STAR Scheme is that it is building on what already exists in most junior rugby clubs – mentorship of young people by coaches who understand the importance of a stable, reliable influence on their lives. One of the first STAR Scheme players, a young man from Hartcliffe called Daley, has turned his life around and is now part of the Bristol Bears Academy and has won a place at SGS Filton College.”

Dan Wooler, Chew Valley STAR Scheme Manage

“Playing rugby for Chew Valley saved him from going down the wrong path in life – he’s a different boy”

Kellie, Daley’s Mum

The STAR Scheme’s mission is to make a material difference in the lives of young people through the sport of rugby. With over 10,000 young people in the Bristol who have been diagnosed with mental health issues, initiatives such as the STAR Scheme are more vital than ever. To understand the depth of how instrumental the scheme is to young people and their families, you can read real life success stories here.

Inclusivity is a key focus of the STAR Scheme and the initiative works hard to ensure young girls are included in the programme as well as boys. Once thought of as a predominantly male sport, the STAR Scheme has made huge strides in pioneering female rugby and is thrilled to have five girls and counting included in the scheme. Truespeed is honoured to be supporting a fantastic young girl called Destiny throughout her journey with the STAR Scheme and we’re so happy she’s part of the scheme.

Why Truespeed Supports Local Communities

Truespeed is powered by a community focused ethos and we strive to help local people in any way we can. We’re passionate about providing free broadband for life to schools and community hubs, but above all else, people are at the heart of what we do. Having seen the difference the STAR Scheme makes in people’s lives, we knew we wanted to support the incredible cause.

Truespeed has proudly committed to a three-year partnership with the STAR Scheme that will see us support players throughout their journey with the club. Helping towards transport costs, clothing and contributing to helping with overall running of the scheme, we’re delighted to help such a valuable local initiative.

“The Chew Valley is a huge part of Truespeed’s history and I’m honoured we can help make a real difference to the lives of residents in the region. It’s important that we give back to the community that has helped us as a local business, and the STAR Scheme is an incredibly worthy cause that will be helping people for generations to come”
