Sky have announced their 2026 mid-contract price rise.
Unfortunately for consumers, mid-contract price rises have become a common occurrence in the broadband industry. Previously, this rise was linked to inflation, and customers would be unaware of the increase until it was announced each year. But OFCOM felt this was unfair and stopped this practise in 2024.
“This leaves customers without sufficient certainty and clarity about the prices they will pay, and unfairly assumes the risk and burden of financial uncertainty from inflation, which is something people cannot predict and do not understand well. So we have decided to ban this practice.
Under new Ofcom rules announced today, any price rise written into a customer’s contract from January 2025 will need to be set out in pounds and pence, prominently and transparently, at the point of sale; and providers will need to be clear about when any changes to prices will occur.” (link to full article)
It’s unclear why Sky, and Now Broadband, aren’t following this guidance. But this might be why they allow their customers to exit their contracts early following the announcement.
How much is the 2026 price increase?
From 1st April, Sky and Now broadband customers will see their monthly payments rise by £3 a month, regardless of what they currently pay.
This means customers on the lower packages will see their monthly bill increase by as much as 12.5%.
Can Sky customers leave if they’re unhappy?
If you’re affected by Sky’s price increase, you are allowed to leave your contract early without paying a cancellation fee – but only within 30 days from the price increase announcement date.
If you pay for Sky TV, though, this policy doesn’t apply. So, you’d have to pay early termination fees if you want to cancel your TV contract before it ends. This also applies if you pay for a broadband and TV bundle – you’ll be able to cancel your broadband for free, but will likely have to move onto a TV-only tariff with Sky.
Why has Sky increased their prices?
As we mentioned earlier, it’s become more and more common for larger providers to increase their customers’ bills each year. They blame things like inflation rates, growing operational costs and upgrades to the network.
At Truespeed, we don’t think that’s fair. That’s why we’re so proud of our Price Fix Promise, we’ll never increase the price our customers pay mid-contract!
